The Extractive Industry – Supplying the materials to build our homes, our jobs and ultimately the future for all Territorians.
The aims of the Extractive Industry NT Association are:
- To improve the status of the industry by research and investigation
- Foster sound and modern practice among its members and encourage high standards of conduct
- To assist, advise, confer and co-operate with public authorities and other bodies or persons in regard to all matters affecting the extractive industries of the Northern Territory
What Are Extractive Industries?
The extractive industry produces a high volume, relatively low value commodity (sand, gravel, topsoil, fill and rock) for all construction and infrastructure development in the Northern Territory.
Transportation is a major component of the cost so for this reason the industry is usually located close to its markets and sometimes results in conflict and competition from other land uses, particularly urban and residential development.
Where once there were almost unlimited resources and vast areas accessible to the extractive industry, ‘competition’ for land has ‘locked-up’ significant areas of extractive resources.
It is critical for the Territory’s development that extractive materials are available at a reasonable cost and that they are provided in a manner which creates the least environmental and social impact on Territorians.
This aim must be balanced by ensuring that the extractive industry, which supplies these materials, has continued long term access (Land Access) to extractive resources in close vicinity to the communities they service.
What are extractive materials used for?
Most people take for granted that building materials come from the ‘building material supply shop’ but many of our top-end building supplies have their origin as simple extractive materials – sand, gravel and rock.
