Authorised Rammer dealers can help businesses find the right solution for penetrative breaking and impact breaking methods depending on their application.

Selecting the correct tool for rockbreaking applications may seem like common sense, but even small misjudgements can lead to increased wear and delays.

There are two primary breaking methods, penetrative breaking and impact breaking, and understanding the basic principles of types of breaking is essential for selecting the right tool.

Matching the tool to the material will not only boost efficiency but also help minimise wear and tear and prolong the tool’s life.

Penetrative breaking: For softer, layered rock

Penetrative breaking, sometimes called “cutting,” involves driving a chisel or moil point into the rock. It’s best suited to soft, layered or low-abrasive materials.

It’s especially effective when using smaller hydraulic rockbreakers, whose high impact rates enhance the penetration process.

Impact breaking: Built for hard, abrasive rock

Impact breaking, on the other hand, works by transferring strong mechanical stress waves from the tool into the material.

It is best suited for hard, brittle and very abrasive materials and in these applications, larger hydraulic rockbreakers—known for their high impact energy—are the most effective.

Blunt tools excel here, as they enable optimal energy transfer, while chisel tools can wear quickly when used on such tough materials.

Simple rules for tool selection

Total Rockbreaking Solutions Sales Director Jeff Jackson provided a straightforward guide for tool selection in quarry environments:

“If you’re breaking in-situ rock that’s still part of the earth (like unblasted, solid ground), use a chisel tool. If you’re breaking down blasted rock, switch to a blunt tool for better performance and durability,” he said.
