When a quarry customer was experiencing repeated bearing failures with their crusher, they contacted Motion experts for support. What unraveled was more than replacing bearings, but a reverse engineering sealing solution that has proven priceless for the operator in terms of equipment costs and downtime.
“We discovered and pointed out to the customer that there was a particular problem with the sealing in the OEM’s design,” explains Motion Asset Reliability Technician, Andrew Dahlitz. “It was allowing ingress to come back into the bearing – whether that was dirt, dust or water, that contamination was affecting the bearing life, and needed to be resolved at the design level.”
When the customer questioned the OEM of the crusher about the design, it turned out there was a new iteration in the equipment that had better sealing. However, a level of trust had already been broken.
“The fact is the OEM’s preferred contractor had been replacing bearings but not looking to the root of the problem, whereas that’s what we do at Motion – we’re invested in finding solutions,” says Andrew. “The customer had experienced first-hand our level of service and expertise, and so after purchasing new seals entrusted to do a refit of the crusher with the better sealing arrangement.”
According to Andrew, the confidence levels of the customer were aided by Motion’s vast network of resources and problem-solving approach.
“There’s a fair amount of experience in our team, both on the ground locally and nationally to fall back on,” he says. “That means we can always find information and a person to speak to within our network on any given issue. Additionally, we want to find solutions as to why problems occur. In the short term, that might mean less bearing sales, but it strengthens our relationships with customers because they trust us to do the job properly. To find long-term solutions.”
