SSAB has taken another step towards its goal of creating a fossil-free steel production line after signing a new agreement with Nordec.
The agreement will see Nordec receive quantities of fossil-free steel from SSAB. They will receive the first batch as part of SSAB’s first pilot project with future quantities to increase as production increases. SSAB wants to have fossil-free steel available to the market by 2026.
“We are pleased to support Nordec’s sustainability goals in the construction and bridge construction industries with our expertise,” SSAB Europe sales director Lotta Ruottinen said.
“The fossil-free steel we produce retains its high quality, but its climate impact is significantly lower compared to steel based on traditional blast furnace technology.
“This helps to reduce our customers’ carbon footprint and provides a competitive advantage in the market.”
The supplied steel will support Nordec’s effort in making steel frame structures for construction projects in Nordic countries and other markets including Poland, Lithuania, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
SSAB works with iron ore producer LKAB and energy company Vattenfall as part of the HYBRIT initiative to develop a value chain for fossil-free iron- and steelmaking. The process replaces the coal-cooking traditionally used for iron ore-based steelmaking with fossil-free electricity and hydrogen.
“It is extremely important for Nordec that investments related to fossil-free steelmaking proceed resolutely,” Nordec Group chief executive officer Kalle Luoto said.
“Cooperation with SSAB contributes greatly to our green transition strategy and in helping us to reach our emission reduction targets.”
