Holcim US has been crowned as one of the winners of the latest Slag Cement Association awards.

The awards recognise the latest innovations and projects using slag cement from 2023. Holcim US won in the Innovation Applications category for its project showcasing Duck Lake Country Club in Michigan.

The project revived the club’s distressed, asphalt parking lot by topping it with a concrete overlay. By replacing 25 per cent of the Portland Limestone Cement with slag, the mix reduced the embodied carbon of the white-topped parking lot project.

“What makes this project particularly innovative is the way we used slag cement to mitigate potential concerns with material degradation while increasing long-term strength and durability,”  Holcim US senior vice president for sales Patrick Cleary said.

“This award exemplifies what we do best in providing our customers with sustainable, long-lasting and economical solutions.”

Since 2010, the SCA has honoured the exceptional use of slag cement in sustainable concrete construction. Holcim US has previously won SCA’s Sustainable Concrete Awards in categories such as Architectural, Lower-Carbon Concrete, Durability, High Performance, and Infrastructure.

At the 2023 awards, eleven construction projects from across the United States were chosen to showcase the broad applications of slag cement and its impact on creating more durable and sustainable concrete. The categories include infrastructure, high performance, architecture, durability, innovative applications, and lower carbon concrete.

Cornell University’s Lyn Zemberekci was recognised at the ceremony. Their project, Utilization of Supplementary Cementitious Materials for Cementing Enhanced Geothermal Wells, won the 2023 Slag Cement in Sustainable Concrete Awards Research Award.

“It has been a great privilege to honour so many unique and innovative projects at this year’s Slag Cement in Sustainable Concrete Awards,” SCA marketing director Nick Brimley said.

“The awards program not only recognises excellence in concrete construction but also shows the pivotal role slag cement plays in advancing sustainability within our built environment.”
