SSAB has announced a new partnership with K-Tec to introduce fossil-free steel in its earthmoving line.
K-Tec, a Canadian-based earthmoving equipment manufacturer, has taken on SSAB’s fossil-free steel to reduce its carbon emissions. The steel will initially be used in K-Tec’s construction and mining products.
“This partnership demonstrates the commitment from both companies toward reducing carbon emissions,” Johnny Sjö ström, head of special steels at SSAB, said.
“Our transformation to change the way steel is made is well underway, and we are proud to already have reached this far in our journey towards a fossil-free future.”
The arrangement extends SSAB and K-Tec’s current partnership. The Canadian already designs, manufactures, and delivers strong, lightweight earthmoving equipment built with SSAB’s Hardox wear steel and Strenx performance steel brands.
SSAB’s pilot project deliveries of fossil-free steel use the unique HYBRIT technology, which was jointly developed by SSAB, iron ore producer LKAB, and energy company Vattenfall. It replaces the coking coal traditionally used for iron ore-based steelmaking with fossil-free electricity and green hydrogen.
