The Victorian Resources regulator has issued a reminder to quarries in the state that work plan compliance is essential.
It comes after a Victorian Quarry was found to be storing waste in a way that “moved away” from the site’s work plan and would “hold back” rehabilitation of the site in the future.
According to the regulator, the quarry was using plastic membranes to “store, filter and dry” slimes from sand processing without the approval of the regulator. Resources Victoria reminded quarries all operational activities must be listed on the approved work plan for the site.
“If quarry operators would like to implement new methods of storing waste they must submit a Work Plan Variation which can be thoroughly assessed by Resources Victoria’s regulator,” Resources Victoria executive director for regulatory operations Chris Webb said.
“Our inspectors frequently conduct checks around the state to ensure quarries are operating lawfully and delivering on their site rehabilitation obligations.”

Regulator issues ‘important’ rehabilitation reminder to operators
The Earth Resources Regulator’s remit includes mines, petroleum and quarry sites in Victoria.
According to the regulator, while the membranes for storage has been trialled in the state, it remains prohbited without approval from Resources Victoria’s Earth Resources Regulator.
Webb said operators must ensure they fully understand their regulatory and operational requirements.
“We will continue to issue notices when we find site operators not complying with their current work plans and creating unnecessary risk. A strong and active regulator reflects well on the broader resources sector,” he said.
