Aggregate Industries will bring electric trucks into its cement fleet for the first time as part of a sustainable initiative.
The UK-based aggregates company experienced a successful trial recently and has committed to Volvo Electric Trucks going forward. The first electric truck will be stationed at its cement plant near Stoke alongside the existing fleet and several electric charging points.
“Introducing electric trucks in our operations marks a pivotal shift towards efficiency and sustainability and is all part of our ongoing effort to decarbonise the business and contribute to our own Net Zero Strategy,” managing director for Aggregate Industries’ cement division Steve Curley said.
“The clean and powerful performance of electric vehicles not only reduces our carbon footprint but also enhances operational efficiency, ensuring a reliable and eco-friendly solution for transporting material.
“By harnessing cutting-edge technology, we are not just modernising, we are optimising our processes to build a greener and more efficient future for our industry.”
According to the release, the electric trucks, with a 600kw motor, can deliver bulk and bagged cement. As part of the initiative, Aggregate Industries has partnered with Lomas Distribution, its strategic distribution ally and contracted haulier for the UK domestic market.
“We are excited to work together with Aggregate Industries in adopting sustainable practices,” Gareth Durnall, general manager at Lomas Distribution, said.
“This exciting step forward perfectly aligns with our joint commitment to environmental responsibility, reflecting a shared dedication to fostering a better and cleaner future.”
