Two consortiums have been nominated as the preferred bidders for the next stages of the North East Link, which encompass major parts of the Eastern Freeway upgrades.

Major Road Projects Victoria will work with both preferred bidders before the contracts are awarded next year.

The Momentum consortium, which includes John Holland, Seymour Whyte, Jacobs, and Mott MacDonald, is the preferred bidder for the upgrades between Hoddle Street and Burke Road. These will include new lanes, connections to the Eastern Busway, and new walking and cycling paths.

The Synergy consortium, including CPB Contractors, BMD Constructions and Arup, has been selected to complete the Eastern Freeway Upgrades between Tram and Springvale roads. The work will include new express lanes, upgrading noise walls and upgrading sections of the Koonung Creek Linear Park.

“Selecting preferred bidders for the next stages of the Eastern Freeway Upgrades is another important step in this project that will connect with the North East Link tunnels and make it easier to move around Melbourne,” said Catherine King, Federal Infrastructure and Transport Minister.

Danny Pearson, Victorian Transport Minister, added: “We’re delivering the first major upgrade of the Eastern Freeway since it was built – slashing travel times and improving public transport in Melbourne’s east.”

Seymour Whyte and John Holland, part of the Momentum Consortium, expressed their delight in being named as a preferred bidder.

“We’re really excited that Momentum, a consortium of Seymour Whyte, John Holland, Jacobs and Mott MacDonald has been named preferred proponent by the Victorian Government to deliver the next package of works,” they shared.

“Subject to a successful final tender, we’ll be delivering upgrades to 6km of the Eastern Freeway between Hoddle Street and Burke Road, with new traffic lanes and a new bridge over the Yarra.”

Construction on these next stages is scheduled to start next year, and the Eastern Freeway Upgrades and North East Link tunnels are estimated to be completed in 2028.
