Strong start for FNQ sub-branch with record attendance in Cairns
The FNQ sub-branch kicked off its 2025 calendar with an impressive gathering of more than 35 quarrying professionals in Cairns.
The strong turnout for this first dinner meeting of the year reflects the growing engagement within the Far North Queensland quarrying community. Attendees represented a broad cross-section of the region’s extractive sector professionals, creating valuable networking opportunities.
Three knowledgeable speakers shared insights with the assembled guests:
Lionel Smith (Resources Safety & Health Queensland) addressed regulatory considerations and safety priorities
Tony Clear (Komatsu) discussed equipment innovations relevant to tropical quarrying operations
Michael Markwell (Taro Software) presented solutions for optimizing operational efficiency
Each presentation sparked engaging discussions that continued during the networking portions of the evening, allowing colleagues to exchange ideas and experiences in a relaxed setting.
Queensland branch joins women’s day celebration
The Queensland branch of the IQA participated in the Awesome Women in Construction (AWIC) Women’s Day Lunch, reinforcing their commitment to diversity in the sector.
Representatives from the IQA Queensland’s Women in Quarrying and Young Members Network (YMN) branches gathered at Brisbane’s Royal International Convention Centre. The event featured inspiring speakers, networking opportunities, and prize draws in celebration of International Women’s Day.
The IQA table included key Queensland representatives Blake Ardrey (branch chairperson), Jason Egan (deputy chairperson), Allan Schoenfisch (committee member and ambassador), Charlie Eaton (ambassador), Grazia Gargiulo (supporting sponsor), Tamara Undy (committee member), Matthew Ferguson (YMN coordinator), Natalie Lestrohan and Riana Kirby.
Young minds meet massive infrastructure
Brisbane’s largest infrastructure project, Cross River Rail, became the backdrop for fresh thinking and vibrant networking as the Queensland branch launched its inaugural YMN mastermind session on 26 March.
The buzz was palpable at the Cross River Rail Experience Centre, where YMN Coordinators Matthew Ferguson and Ryan Grech kicked off what promises to be a game-changing format for the sector’s rising stars.
“We wanted to break away from traditional presentations and create something more dynamic,” Ferguson said. “Seeing these young professionals connecting and collaborating was exactly what we’d hoped for.”
The day shifted into high gear when attendees stepped into the project’s impressive virtual theatre at the Elizabeth Street precinct. The massive tunnelling operation came to life through cutting-edge digital technology, offering a rare glimpse behind the construction barriers of Brisbane’s ambitious infrastructure project.
The Cross River Rail team – Brit, Nook and Brad – fielded questions with expertise and enthusiasm, highlighting the critical role quarry products play in the project.
“These tunnels aren’t just engineering marvels – they’re showcases for our sector’s essential contribution to infrastructure,” noted one participant during the lively Q&A session.
Central Queensland sub-branch explores Mt Chalmers Mining Heritage
Central Queensland quarrying professionals gathered at Parkhurst Tavern before traveling to the Mt Chalmers History Centre, where they explored an impressive collection of photographs and artifacts. The journey continued to the Mt Chalmers Copper-Gold Mine, where Andrew Sparke, executive chairman of QMines, led an informative site tour. Sparke shared insights into the site’s historical significance while outlining QMines’ vision for its future development.
“Mt Chalmers perfectly demonstrates how we can honour our industry’s heritage while embracing innovation,” Central Queensland sub-branch chairperson Nathan Parziani said.
The event concluded at Parkhurst Tavern, where attendees enjoyed refreshments while discussing the day’s experiences and strengthening professional connections.
“Having 34 participants for our first event shows the vibrant mining community we have in central Queensland,” committee member Sam Hill commented said.
Bowls day brings sector together
The South Perth Bowls Club played host to the IQA WA Bowls Day on Friday 7 March, where sector professionals enjoyed an evening of friendly competition and networking against a spectacular sunset.
Striker Western Australia’s director of strategic initiatives Jordan Pedley said the quarry industry in WA was built on strong relationships, and with so much of it operating in remote locations across the state, events like the WA Bowls Day were invaluable.
Participants tested their skills on the green before enjoying a generous barbecue and refreshments provided by event major sponsor WA Limestone, a consistent supporter of IQA initiatives.
“The atmosphere was fantastic, with the perfect mix of networking and friendly competition. It was a great reminder of the strong community that makes this industry what it is,” Pedley said.
Kimberly Quarries claimed top honours, with Trevor Bovell’s team displaying exceptional skill throughout the competition. Komatsu secured second place under Barry Harken’s leadership, while Hitachi, led by Dale Smulders, rounded out the top three. Lincom’s team, headed by Mark Crestani, graciously accepted the wooden spoon with good humour. Special thanks go to Ledge Finance, the prize sponsor, whose contributions enhanced the event’s success, and to all participants who made this gathering a highlight of the IQA calendar. •
