Kris Jaryn shares how Bonfiglioli gearboxes are supporting iron ore mining operations in Australia.

Australia is currently one of the world’s largest exporters of iron ore, with a reported $138 billion worth of the material exported between June 2023 and June 2024.

According to Bonfiglioli national product manager for heavy duty products Kris Jaryn, iron ore mines in Western Australia, in particular, are driving demand for specialised power transmission and equipment solutions that enable more efficient filtration and the dewatering of slurries.

The company recently supplied a local iron ore mine with four 3/H compact bevel helical/planetary units to drive horizontal vacuum belt filter (HVBF) equipment. These gearboxes combine the high transmissible torque of the Bonfiglioli 300 series, with the excellent power transmission of the HDO series, transmitting a torque of 500,00Nm. This makes them ideal for applications that demand high power density with lower output speeds.

A versatile solution

The 3/H offers a long service life and low maintenance requirements, making it a cost-efficient solution. The series is also extremely versatile and is available with a variety of output and input shaft configurations, as well as mounting positions.

Bonfiglioli can also configure the unit with the output shaft on either the right or left side, to meet the unique application requirements of the customer. In addition, the 3/H can be customised with a wide range of accessories to enhance heat dissipation, lubrication and safety.

Bonfiglioli’s wide range of integrated solutions, developed over the last 60 years through close collaboration with leading OEMs, are proven to meet the demands of the sector. “We understand that customers in the mining sector require efficient and reliable solutions that support continuous production and high performance,” Jaryn said. Thanks to the versatility of the products, Bonfiglioli can combine products to develop a tailored solution that can achieve the specific speed and torque required.

Serving sector needs

Bonfiglioli’s focus within the sector is set on optimising customer productivity, uptime and profitability. Through the company’s strong local footprint, it can provide customers with comprehensive support and service, as well as local assembly and the supply of spare parts and maintenance.

Looking ahead, Jaryn is positive about the role that Bonfiglioli will play in the development of the mining sector.

“We understand the challenges facing mines – escalating operational costs, sustainability requirements and energy efficiency coals, to name a few. Bonfiglioli remains committed to meeting the evolving needs of our customers,” he said.
