Sandvik has released its latest PowerCarbide® grades, SH70 (Self-Hardening), which presents a major innovation.

One of Sandvik’s latest PowerCarbide® grades, SH70 (Self-Hardening), represents the most significant advancement in rock drilling carbide technology in decades. This advanced grade sets a new benchmark for performance, longevity, and cost-efficiency in surface drilling, especially in demanding quarry conditions.

Developed through improved understanding of how different rock types impact drill bit wear, SH70 can extend service life and grinding intervals by up to 30 per cent compared to standard carbide grades. The result is less downtime, fewer bit changes, greater operational safety and improved overall productivity.

SH70 – Hardens during drilling

SH70 is designed for hard and competent rock and features a homogeneous composition with a unique self-hardening effect. As drilling progresses, the surface of the material becomes more wear resistant due to enhanced deformation hardening. This ensures consistent penetration rates and extended tool life in demanding conditions.

This grade is part of Sandvik’s growing PowerCarbide® range, developed entirely in-house. From sourcing raw tungsten at its own mine to final drill bit production, Sandvik Rock Tools control the full value chain. This integrated approach allows for greater innovation, consistent quality and reliable tool performance.

Sandvik also remains the only manufacturer with a global carbide recycling system, helping reduce waste and supporting customers’ sustainability goals.

For quarry operators looking to improve drilling efficiency, reduce costs and minimise environmental impact, the new PowerCarbide® SH70 offers a smarter, more resilient solution. Built to perform and made to last, these new grades continue to push what is possible in rock tool technology.
