Almost 100K concrete segments daily

The largest precast concrete facility in Victoria will be ramping up its productivity to contribute to the construction of Melbourne’s Suburban Rail Loop East.

The factory in Benalla is set to supply the concrete segments for SRL East’s twin tunnels, employing more than 75 workers and creating additional jobs in the supply chain.

We reported on LS Precast back in August 2024 when the company manufactured 46,000 concrete segments for installation by TBMs on the North East Link Project in the wake of previously supplying 49,000 segments for the West Gate Tunnel Project.

This time, LS Precast is set to manufacture 96,700 concrete segments in its central Victoria facility for the southern section of SRL East’s twin tunnels between Cheltenham and Glen Waverley.

For the North East Link, the central Victoria facility produced 90 segments per day but for the SRL whose production starts in October, it will ramp up to more than 170 each day until mid-2028.

Major construction of SRL East is now underway with the first TBMs arriving on site later this year. Tunnelling will commence in 2026.

Construction of SRL East has more than 3000 people working on the project, along with dozens of sub-contractors and suppliers from across the state.
