Victorian quarry supports Big Build project

A Victorian quarry’s materials have supported the latest stage of Victoria’s Big Build project development over the Old Calder Highway in Diggers Rest.

The Victorian quarry has supplied more than 10,000 cubic metres of volcanic rock to use as backfill for the new road bridge over the rail line. The mix of soil and crushed rock from the quarry, due to its location, helped slash 616 tonnes of carbon emissions.

The materials will support a new road bridge. The new bridge will help separate vehicles and trains which will ease local traffic congestion.

The new bridge’s construction has been ongoing since August 2024 using a 22.5m piling rig to create the foundations, drilling 10 holes about 10m deep into the ground.

The crews are also supporting works to remove the level crossing at Watson’s Road, Diggers Rest, which is nearby. According to the Victorian Government, more than 8000 vehicles use the two level crossings every day, with 27 trains travelling through the boom gates during the morning peak, creating 36 minutes of boom gate down time.

The road bridges are estimated to be opened in 2025.
