Thousands of cubic metres of concrete have gone into creating the Webster Street underpass in Dandenong which will open two years ahead of schedule.
The rail line underpass is being built as part of the Webster Street Level Crossing Removal Project after the railway crossing was closed and the boom gates were dismantled late last year.
A $252 million contract was awarded to an alliance comprising John Holland Group, Kellogg Brown and Root (KBR), Metro Trains Melbourne, and the Level Crossing Removal Project in December 2024.
Since the end of 2025, crews have been working to excavate mountains of dirt and pour more than 10,000 cubic metres of concrete to create the foundations for the underpass which will connect Princes Highway-Lonsdale Street to Cheltenham and Hammond roads.
With a 5.4m clearance under the rail bridge to accommodate trucks and tall vehicles, the underpass will divert traffic from local streets and Dandenong’s CBD and eliminate the loss of 60 collective minutes’ closure of the boom gates in peak hour.
The Victoria Government announced that the new road underpass will open in September 2026 – two years ahead of schedule. Getting rid of the Webster Street boom gates has made the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines boom gate-free in 2025.
