The first of a dozen concrete pours has been completed on a new hospital in the Pilbara, funded by the WA Government with mining giant Rio Tinto putting in $20M.
The $92.8 million project will see the new Tom Price Hospital delivered late in 2027 with emergency, private consultation rooms, primary care, inpatient beds, dental and pathology services.
Approximately 80 cubic metres of concrete were poured in the first major pour for the hospital in the town of Tom Price, 1500km north of Perth. A further 12 concrete pours are scheduled between July and October 2026 to complete the hospital’s foundation and structure.
Early works for the long-awaited project have been completed in the first half of this year, including critical flood mitigation and site preparation. A second package of works is now underway, focusing on construction of the building slab, installation of in-ground services and structural components.
The WA Government said the site has been carefully prepared for construction, with inground services installed, protective barriers put in place, and reinforcement laid to ensure structural integrity.
Materials for the project, such as sand and crushed stone sourced from nearby quarries, and concrete supplied by a local plant are supporting regional businesses and jobs.
New access points and roads have been established to support construction and future hospital operations, while essential services, including water, sewer, stormwater, and power, have been connected to the existing Tom Price infrastructure.
