Quarrying and mining operations in Western Victoria are being urged to prepare for site audits from the state’s resources regulator.
Resources Victoria’s Earth Resources Regulator is looking at quarry and mine sites in the Northern Grampians, Ararat and Pyrenees shires from July 16-17. The site audits will consider aspects of operational risk and commitment to the site’s work plans.
The regulator has been carrying out audits across the state throughout the year. Past inspections have uncovered inadequate fuel management, poor waste storage, and a lack of boundary markers.
“We’ll be checking things like site boundaries and extraction limits, as well as ensuring operators are properly managing dust and noise,” Resources Victoria acting chief inspector Rebecca Carlton said.
“Our inspectors will be reminding operators of their responsibilities and gathering information to guide future audits.”
The regulator is planning to use the information gathered from the site inspection to inform future audits. This broader program is designed to improve understanding of how quarries and mines manage risk.
As part of these audits, operators are being urged to consider boundaries and extraction limits, dust and noise requirements.
Carlton said unmanaged or poorly managed risk will be required to be addressed.
“If required, we’ll take enforcement action to ensure behaviour is changed to protect nearby communities, infrastructure and the environment,” she said.
