Victoria’s Earth Resources Regulator is set to continue its wave of inspections across the state in quarry sites, with further site audits set for East Gippsland and the Bass Coast.
Victoria’s Earth Resources Regulator has been conducting site audits throughout the year as part of a broader programme to understand how quarries manage site risk.
“It’s been a big year out in the field for the regulator. By the end of August, we expect to have inspected all sand quarries in the Grantville and Gurdies areas,” Resources Victoria acting chief inspector Rebecca Carlton said.
The regulator is set to look at specific areas of quarry operation in the next wave of site visits. These areas include extraction limits detailed in their work plans and site rehabilitation obligations being up to date.
This information will be used to inform future audits and inspections. In the first half of the year some site audits uncovered inadequate fuel management, poor waste storage and a lack of boundary markers.
Quarries are being urged to consider their extraction limits, rehabilitation commitments, and dust and noise controls. Operators will be required to address any areas that are being poorly managed or do not meet the site’s work plan standards.
“Our focus remains on operational risk, including ensuring extraction limits and site rehabilitation obligations are being met,” Carlton said.
“What we are seeing is that operators want to do the right thing. Where we have identified room for improvement, they have completed required actions promptly.”
