Boral has celebrated a major milestone for its alternative fuel station at its Berrima Cement Works in New South Wales.
While the financial year normally ends with everyone crunching numbers and filing taxes, Boral celebrated its usage of alternative fuel in its cement manufacturing at the New South Wales site.
The company used more than 100kt of alternative fuels which were processed through the alternative fuel station at site. The Berrima Cement Works team held a celebratory BBQ and were presented with a commemorative jacket.

“The achievement means during the financial year, the team displaced more than 80,000 tonnes of coal from its manufacturing operations. It also means the diversion of waste material that would otherwise end up in landfill – materials with high biomass content and tyres – providing environmental benefits and contributing to a circular economy,” Boral posted.
“This is all part of our overall decarbonisation program at the facility, ensuring we meet obligations under the Safeguard Mechanism. To date, we have sustainably achieved over 30 per cent of Berrima Kiln’s thermal energy through coal substitution at site, with significantly higher substitution rates as high as 45 per cent successfully trialled.
“With recent technology upgrades, including the Chlorine Bypass, and future investment in required infrastructure, we are working towards 60 per cent substitution over the coming years at site.”
