Construct and conquer

International and domestic construction partners have been announced for a new desalination plant in South Australia, with the global firm eyeing expansion in Australia.

Spanish infrastructure giant Acciona will build a 5.3 gigalitre-per-year reverse osmosis plant at Billy Lights Point on South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula to provide a climate-independent source of sustainable drinking water for 35,000 of SA Water’s customers.

Acciona and McConnell Dowell were part of a consortium in 2011 that delivered the 100-gigalitre-capacity Adelaide Desalination Plant (pictured). The associated marine infrastructure for the Eyre Peninsula plant will be constructed by McConnell Dowell.

Local SA firm Leed Engineering & Construction will design and build the pipeline that will carry the drinking water from the facility to the existing water distribution network.

Meanwhile, Acciona is currently exploring the potential acquisition of the Australian operations of Fletcher Building as it looks to scale its presence here.

While the division has major contracts in  NSW and Queensland, Fletcher Building has posted losses of the Australian business in recent years. The sale is rumoured to be valued at up to $500 million.
