Sustainability Victoria has shared details on a new glass recycling facility that has been launched to support recycled materials in regional Victoria.

The new facility, which has been funded by Sustainability Victoria and operated by construction materials company ASQ, produces recycled glass which can be reused in construction and other applications.

“The challenges of contamination and hesitation around recycled products are real,” Sustainability Victoria customers and partnerships director Gwyneth Elsum said.

“At Sustainability Victoria, we support the innovation needed to overcome these barriers – aligning investment to make circular choices not just possible, but practical and preferred for businesses across Victoria’s regions.”

So far, the facility’s recycled glass has been used in several applications, including sand substitutes, concrete and asphalt additives. The facility is able to remove contaminants such as sugars and yeast, enhancing material purity for use as a sand substitute. The facility has the capacity to process up to 5000 tonnes of glass every year.

“Some buyers have previously rejected recycled glass sand due to its smell and inconsistent quality,” ASQ’s Travis Harrick said.

“Our new washed product is clean, consistent, and ready for use – our customers love it.”

The project is funded through the Victorian Circular Economy Recycling Modernisation Fund, delivered by Sustainability Victoria under the Australian Government’s Recycling Modernisation Fund and the Victorian Government’s Recycling Victoria: a new economy plan.
