New data has highlighted that demand for circular construction materials is on the rise as the sector continues to pursue a sustainable approach.
The new data from the construction industry has shown that customers’ interest in circular products is growing when selecting suppliers.
According to the new survey, 94 per cent of respondents believed the availability of circular products was a consideration when choosing a supplier over a rival brand. More than half of the respondents considered access to circular products as “very important”, which is an increase from previous years.
“Our research makes clear that closed-loop supply chains must be central to that future. Driven by our clear purpose of leading the way in circular construction, we are working hand-in-hand with partners across the value chain to remove barriers, accelerate progress, and make sustainable building practices the industry standard,” Holcim UK managing director of aggregates and construction and demolition waste Kaziwe Kaulule said.
The survey, commissioned by Holcim UK, saw 97 per cent of respondents believed embracing the circular economy was important. More than half of respondents had specific circularity targets in place across all areas of their operations. Only 2 per cent of respondents said their business has no intention of introducing targets.
The key challenges identified by the survey were that businesses faced increased costs from disassembling materials and a lack of specialist labour which prevented greater adoption of products made from consumer or industrial waste.
Around a third of respondents wanted to see more government funding made available for training for circular materials and a third of respondents also wanted to see the prioritisation of specialised skillsets for this.
“Circularity is fast becoming a fundamental expectation from our customers, and together we’re proving that high-performance products can also be low-carbon and circular,” Holcim UK managing director of the asphalt division Danny King said.
“To ensure wider adoption within UK construction projects, solutions must be commercially viable, simple to access and underpinned by vital product data and technical support.”
