An upgraded ready-mix concrete facility in Albany, Western Australia, has entered operation following redevelopment works aimed at improving production efficiency and strengthening supply capacity across the Great Southern region.

The investment reflects ongoing demand for concrete in regional construction markets, including housing, civil works and infrastructure projects.

Holcim general manager WA aggregates and concrete Sam Russel said the redevelopment is intended to support long-term supply in the region.

“Albany has been an important part of our network for decades,” Russell said. “The upgrade ensures we’re well positioned to continue supporting the Great Southern region with modern, efficient facilities that meet today’s standards.”

The Albany plant has operated in the region for nearly six decades, forming part of a wider ready-mix network supplying Western Australia’s construction sector. The redevelopment represents a long-term investment in regional supply infrastructure.

Regional supply and infrastructure demand

Construction activity in regional Western Australia continues to rely on dependable ready-mix supply chains. Concrete plants located close to project sites help reduce transport distances, manage logistics and maintain product consistency for contractors.

The Albany upgrade is intended to support builders and civil contractors working across the Great Southern region, where local supply capacity can influence project timelines and delivery costs.

Operational changes and site improvements

The facility upgrade includes the installation of a new batching plant, changes to the site layout and updated environmental management systems intended to support modern operating standards.

Key elements of the redevelopment include a new batching system designed to improve operational efficiency and support consistent concrete production. Adjustments to the site layout were also implemented to improve vehicle movement and overall safety during plant operations.

Environmental management systems were incorporated into the design to align with contemporary operating standards used across modern ready-mix facilities.

Integration of community and cultural elements

As part of the redevelopment, a commissioned artwork titled The Story of the Land was installed at the entrance to the plant. The piece was created by Wiradjuri artist Nanii Davis and reflects the connection between the site and the surrounding landscape.

Industrial sites increasingly incorporate visual or cultural elements as part of broader community engagement and site presentation initiatives, particularly in regional areas where facilities operate close to residential or commercial zones.
