Two Komatsu field service technicians swapped mine sites for the fast-paced environment of international motorsport after attending the 2026 Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne as guests of the Atlassian Williams Formula One team.

Western Australian technicians Caitlyn Hayes and Brayden Rodda were selected through Komatsu’s employee recognition program and spent the race weekend embedded with the Atlassian Williams F1 Team. The experience offered a close look at the operational environment of a Formula One team, including access to the garage, engineering briefings and pit crew drills.

Hayes said the environment highlighted the importance of precision and communication in high-performance engineering settings.

“Seeing the level of precision, communication and teamwork required to prepare a car for a Grand Prix race really puts into perspective how much goes on behind the scenes,” she said.

“Every person has a role and everything happens with such speed and accuracy to get the car ready to race.”

Across the race weekend, Hayes and Rodda attended engineering meetings with drivers, observed crew practice sessions and watched the team operate during live practice sessions. The pair observed how the team prepares its cars for race sessions, witnessing the coordination required between mechanics, engineers and drivers.

They also took part in pit crew drills, providing an opportunity to better understand the technology and coordination required during race operations.

Hayes said the experience contrasted with her usual work environment in Western Australia’s mining sector.

“It was definitely a change going from the red dirt of my swing at work to the crowds and bustle of Melbourne,” she said.

“The buzz around the paddock and in the pits is something that’s hard to describe until you experience it yourself.”

Rodda said the experience offered a rare opportunity to observe another high-performance engineering industry up close.

“It’s not something I’d ever imagined experiencing in my career,” he said.

“Getting that kind of access and seeing how another high-performance industry operates was really interesting.”
