Boral has presented its Supporting Excellence Police Award to Portland police leading senior constable Lee-Anne Nelson, in recognition of her commitment to next-generation driver education in regional Victoria.

The award was announced during the delivery of the Ryda road safety program at Deakin University, as part of Boral’s longstanding partnership with Road Safety Education Limited and its Zero Harm commitment.

Boral executive general manager concrete and quarries Victoria Duncan Harris said the company is proud to support initiatives that help young people better understand road risks, particularly around heavy vehicles.

“We are proud to be a longstanding partner of RSE and the Ryda program, having students learn from our Boral drivers to better understand risks around trucks and heavy vehicles on the road,” Harris said.

“As one of the largest suppliers of construction materials in Australia, we have a large heavy vehicle footprint – about 3,500 heavy vehicles – and are on the road every day delivering to customers. We are committed to better educating the next generation of drivers and passengers with whom we share the road.”

Harris said Leading Senior Constable Nelson had been instrumental in securing school participation, as well as local road safety experts, community backing and funding to ensure the program’s delivery across regional Victoria.

“We are very pleased to present the Boral Supporting Excellence Police Award to Leading Senior Constable Lee-Anne Nelson for her deep level of support and outstanding commitment to road safety education,” he said.

Road Safety Education head of program delivery John Elliot said the award recognised the critical role police play in prevention and education.

“Leading senior constable Nelson and her fellow officers unfortunately have seen first-hand what can go wrong with poor decision-making on the road,” Elliott said.

“Ryda brings together local support with Australia’s largest and longest-running best practice road safety education program.”
