Holcim has combined operational waste reduction initiatives in Melbourne with a refreshed identity for its ECOPact low-carbon concrete range, as it continues to position circular construction as a core strategy in Australia.

At its Epping and Preston concrete plants in Melbourne’s north, Holcim recently completed a zero-waste pilot designed to reduce landfill, improve resource recovery and lower operating costs.

The program focused on practical changes at site level, including recycling timber pallets, introducing commingled recycling streams and composting organic waste. Returned concrete is now processed into recycled aggregates at Oaklands Junction Quarry, supporting material reuse within the business.

Holcim area operations manager Mitchell Elzink said the initiative demonstrated how sustainability and cost efficiency can be aligned.

“The project has provided a great framework for waste disposal at both plants and that will continue moving forward,” he said.

“A special thanks to the operations teams at both Epping and Preston for their support with this. I’m thrilled to be a part of this initiative, and it was fantastic to achieve sustainable outcomes alongside cost reduction.”

Over a three-month period in 2025, the two plants diverted tonnes of cardboard, timber and other materials from landfill, alongside adjustments to waste collection that delivered estimated annual savings of about $10,000.

The Melbourne pilot is expected to be expanded to additional sites during 2026, forming part of a broader environmental improvement program across the company’s concrete network.

Alongside operational changes, Holcim has refreshed the branding of its ECOPact concrete range in Australia, aligning it with the company’s global identity and sustainability strategy.

The updated branding reinforces ECOPact’s role as a flagship low-carbon product, offering at least a 30 per cent reduction in embodied carbon compared with standard concrete while maintaining performance characteristics.
